About ICAS

For over 20 years the International Competition and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) has taken place each year throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa.

ICAS is independent skills-based assessments with a competition element. ICAS is developed annually for primary and secondary school students in the subject areas of Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science and Writing.

ICAS provides an opportunity for all students and teachers to gain a measure of achievement in an external assessment. It provides parents with comprehensive reporting results and gives helpful information regarding their child’s performance.

Each student will receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they have answered correctly, as well as the average marks in the region. It is also useful for highlighting his/her strengths and weaknesses in the skills and processes of the subject taken.

The certificates awarded for each year level in Malaysia are as follows:

  • Gold Medals to the top scorers
  • High Distinction to the top 1%
  • Distinction to the next 10%
  • Credit to the next 25%
  • Merit to the next 10%
  • Participation to all other participants

The percentages allocated to awards are approximate and will vary according to the number of students taking each test and the distribution of their scores.

Medal presentation ceremonies are held annually in November to publicly acknowledge, encourage and reward students’ academic achievements.

Medal winning students (Paper I and Paper J) in their final two years of schooling also qualify for bonus Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) Points which can be used toward undergraduate degree programs at the University of New South Wales.
